Instagram home tour: Updated traditional home with soft color and character
I am happy to bring you the second in my new series, Instagram home tours! I am all about sharing my friends' hard work on their beautiful homes with a different audience than just Instagram app users--so I am bringing their home tours to my blog!
This time it's Whiney from @theredfernhome. She's made some great classic updates to her 1990's home on 2 wooded acres in Oklahoma and has a cohesive but fun style with rich blues and greens mixed in throughout. She is also a talented painter and has done some DIY art projects of beautiful oil paintings she displays in her decor!
Take it away, Whitney!
Updated Traditional and Colorful Home Tour
Our house was built in 1997 and is set on 2 wooded acres. It's a 3,500 sf one-story home that's more spread out than the homes that are being built nowadays, and that's what I loved about it (rather than being narrow and deep because builders are cramming as many new houses into developments as they can, it is more wide and long).
It had builder grade finishes when we moved in, and the major renovations we did prior to move-in included installing 5" solid white oak floors throughout all of the main living areas and hallways, gutting and reorganizing the kitchen to "square up" the cabinets and walls (to get rid of those 90's angles) adding new trim and moulding to a few rooms, remodeling the powder bath and guest bath, and painting everything.
We completely gutted the kitchen: we did new cabinets taking them all the way to the ceiling, added a large white oak island, new quartz countertops and backsplash, hardware, pendants, etc.!
Since moving in we've been focusing on a more DIY approach to the remaining areas to be updated. First, I stenciled and painted our boys' bathroom floor and added "sharpie" shiplap.
We transformed my oldest son's room for the One Room Challenge last summer by adding a vertical shiplap feature wall, revamping the bedding, and painting the vinyl windows black!
Our family room has received quite a bit of love recently too, with a fireplace grout makeover, vertical shiplap behind the TV, and simplified trim on the built-ins which has made a huge difference!
And last but not least, probably my favorite project we completed last year was the sitting room coffee table we built from scratch! It was a labor of love and was inspired by the entry console in Chris Loves Julia's house, and although it was a looong process with a few bumps along the way, I smile every time I walk by it :)
I'm on a mission to make every corner of our home a place that is unique and full of character, yet easily livable and able to flex as my design preferences shift over time!
What a beautiful, special home! I love all the wall treatments, high quality DIYs (that coffee table is definitely impressive!!), and those beautiful blues!
I had to share Whitney's paintings as well so I asked her for a couple more photos. She painted these little pears, and that large landscape above her sofa. I've done a little painting in the past but almost always abstract... I am seriously impressed and kind of want to pull out the paints and play around with a landscape now!!
Thanks so much to Whitney for sharing!!! Go check her out @theredfernhome on Instagram for more. Hope you are enjoying these Instagram home tours, I sure am!!
