How to Wear DIY: Lace dress, winter whites...

When I made my pretty little white lace sheath dress late last summer, I didn't plan to take it past early fall... I wore it for our anniversary pics and loved it, but around the same time saw some fun inspiration for taking your white lace dress into fall and winter--add some red, some tights, some tan leather... could be cute. But now it's hardly even fall anymore, no leaves on the trees and the color scheme is more grey than warm fall tones! So I took it a step further. ;) This weekend I made my lace dress work for winter with tights, an edgy jacket, and a colorful infinity scarf.

Been wearing this jacket a lot lately!! And got the clutch at Target clearance for $5 after I saw Sam's, which she also got for $5... lucky Target clearance-ing!

I loved adding the color from the scarf! It's a knit infinity scarf from this Etsy shop. I have seriously been wanting more color this fall--seems I always like things better in grey, or white...--so adding a bright print scarf has been keeping my outfits from being completely neutral.
Jacket: Ross (similar/similar/similar). Scarf: Ooh Baby Designs. Clutch: Target.
Shooties: JC Penney. Dress: DIY!

Oh, winter. I don't like you, but I'm trying to make the best of you. I also don't like it when you get dark at 4:15 and I have a very hard time taking my blog pictures. ;)

  2. I love the jacket! It's both cute and kinda rock'n'roll. The winter is tough on us bloggers in harsher climates. At this point I'm lucky to have some light at all, and it's gone by 3 p.m, sometimes even earlier. Can't wait for the longer days to be back.

  3. You really made this dress so versatile with great styling. We'll be moving back north this year and I understand the fading light dilemma. I always countdown until the turn of the year in decmber since it's the light that I crave more than summer warmth.

  5. I love the way you styled this dress and I think it looks perfect for winter! Who says you can't wear white after Labor Day?! I also hate that it gets darker earlier!!!

  6. This is great inspiration because I just bought a white lace dress off the clearance rack at Urban! I totally feel you on how early it gets dark... I've been taking photos in the morning with my sleepy face on, I have about a 20 minute windows of daylight before I have to catch the bus.

  7. I discovered your blog recently, and really love your creativity! Sometimes I wish the tutorials are in more details so a beginning seamstress like me can follow them.
From your blog, I can see how useful patterns can be. I only have one so far, and am looking to collect more. I am wondering if it will be possible if you can have a post about some of your favourite patterns or the patterns that you find more useful? Thank you!

    1. Thanks! I haven't done too many tutorials lately, just some simple ones. Although, I have posted about my favorite simple patterns: http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2011/03/sewing-circle-sale-fabric-good-beginner.html so that should help! Also check out this post about how to sew with patterns http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2012/09/how-to-use-sewing-pattern.html and how to get the right pattern size http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2010/08/sewing-circle-how-to-cut-out-right.html and how to get the right fit http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2012/01/clothing-sizes-are-weird-but-so-are.html. 11. I love your outfit! The white in winter is especially unexpected. When I think about it, I don't own any white dresses besides my wedding dress. I think it makes a great statement, and I love that you MADE it!

  13. Genius! And, such a money saver too! Being on a budget makes it difficult to splurge on new stuff every season. It's been ages since I've shopped. So, this definitely inspires me to carry over past seasons to the current ones. I think almost everything is bi-seasonal now-a-days. Florals, even shorts! Excellent reads! I'm inspired. And, cute jacket too!

  14. Ahh this weather definitely still feels like fall to me!! Just pair some cute rain boots with your lace dress and you'll have that fun hard/soft contrast--then wear it through the winter ;)

  15. Love this look! That scarf is darling! I'm not a fan of the early nights either. It's so weird to feel ready for bed at 4:30!
