No pattern! Black and white striped maxi skirt

It's exactly like it sounds... I threw together this striped maxi skirt in just a few minutes, and didn't need a pattern!  I found this super fun black and white stripe knit, nice and thick and cottony, at Goodwill for $3.99.  It was a big piece but sort of oddly shaped--suuuuuper wide but with a chunk out of it.

I knew it was destined for something comfy.  I don't really have much in the way of casual skirts, so I thought a maxi skirt would be good!  I traced an old J.Crew skirt I have for the basic shape, and cut it a little longer.  Gotta be on-trend, ya know.

Luckily, I had a trip to my mom's planned, and I made this there with her lovely serger.  The side seams don't curl, are nicely finished, and stretch so easily! Wahoo!!  I just turned over the top twice and made a casing for some elastic.

See my Sewing Circle post on sewing on knits if you want more info...

Ta-da!

Check out those matched stripes... ;)

So yeah, comfy and fun!  I highly recommend you throw one together sometime!

  1. So cute and simple! Maxi dresses and skirts are never long enough for me (tall girl troubles), so one day I might just break down and make myself a long skirt like this.

  3. Arggh so jealous of how you matched the stripes. I am, right this minute, procrastinating cutting out a top from a striped knit because it just WILL NOT be nice!
The stripes won't lie straight, stupid fabric! Aghh! Any tips?

    1. Press it really well before you sew, and pin at every stripe! Totally do able, just go slow. The wide stripes are a little easier than narrow--but more obvious if they don't match!
